Lokkur

From Ellen Berger.
   A very special Icelandic horse.

I am the very happy and proud owner of a wonderful Icelandic gelding named lokkur. This beautiful black and white pinto is a wonderful riding partner. He goes where I ask him, when I ask him, and at the speed I ask him, no arguments, no fuss, and no fights. He also has excellent ground manners, loads and unloads on trailers like a dream, crosses water easily, jumps objects obligingly and moves calmly amongst traffic, barking dogs and any other unexpected diversions. Although Lokkur is is capable of great daring and bursts of speed he is also equally willing to walk slowly and methodically when asked. He is equally at home in any position within a group of horses or when asked to strike out on his own. He is a kindly and considerate partner who tries to understand his riders commands and obey them and he adapts equally well whether his riders is an experienced foxhunter, a child, or a timid adult beginner. Although my horse sounds too good to be true I really did not exaggerate his great qualities. Not only has he taken me safely and comfortably through numerous wonderful riding experiences, but so he has taken many other. But you don't have to take my word for it, just ask any of his many human friends. and though it gives me great pleasure to share him with others, I still feel unbelievably lucky to call Lokkur mine....my friend, my riding partner, my companion.

We lost Lokkur in 2003 to colic. I would rather have lost both my legs. Lokkur was a brave and honest soul with more good character than any animal I have met. If you ask around you will hear "he taught me to canter" "taught me to jump" "open gates" "get over my fear"  "we chased a coyote to a stand still in open country" "turned in the fastest time in the puddle jump" the list goes on and on and on. Lokkur we will all miss you forever and find comfort in the best memories a horse could ever give.

Lovable Lokkur

There are many different horses
All special in their own way
But none as cool as Lokkur
Bright and perky every day

He was always happy to see you
It was obvious to see
You could almost hear him saying
"Hello, come and talk to me!"

He was an amazing jumper
Making everyone stop and say wow
And you have to pause and wonder
How he could be gone now

Our cute little non-walker
The amazing Lovable Lokkur
